Turn Back the Clock on Years of Damage

Woman pointing to her smile

Do you have imperfections in your smile that you wish would just disappear? Even though our teeth are meant to last a lifetime, wear, tear, and disease can lead to the need for professional repairs and improvements. Porcelain veneers are a common way to address the aesthetic effects that oral health conditions have on our teeth. Dr. Kimberly Capua is experienced in providing custom-made porcelain veneers in Carrollton to give her patients a way to transform numerous flaws in their smile. Read on to learn everything that you need to know about porcelain veneers and the problems that they can fix.

What are Porcelain Veneers?

Veneers are ultra-thin, tooth-shaped enhancements that address the cosmetic deficiencies of a smile. They are permanently cemented over the front side of teeth to conceal permanent stains, cracks, and chips. For patients who desire a full smile makeover, porcelain veneers are a great option to consider.

The Porcelain Veneers Process

The process for receiving veneers is very individualized. After an in-depth consultation with our team, each veneer is crafted in a dental laboratory to very precise measurements. The careful and methodical nature of creating veneers is what makes these cosmetic enhancements appear natural and complementary to your smile. Porcelain is a very lifelike material; it comes in several white shades and reflects light the way that biological teeth do.

What Problems Can Porcelain Veneers Fix?

Dr. Capua routinely uses porcelain veneers to fix problems like:

  • Cosmetic chips or cracks
  • Deep stains and discoloration
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Slightly gapped teeth
  • Slightly crooked teeth

One of the unique benefits of veneers is that they offer patients with slightly crooked teeth a way to receive a straight-looking smile without the years that it can take with braces. While they don’t physically straighten your teeth, they’re sometimes called “instant orthodontics” for their ability to make teeth appear beautifully aligned. For mild to moderately misaligned smiles, we offer Invisalign in Carrollton—a discreet and comfortable way to straighten your teeth.

What is the Cost of Porcelain Veneers?

The cost of your porcelain veneers will depend on a variety of factors. Mostly, how many veneers you need and the condition of your oral health. That’s why it’s hard to give a precise estimate without examining your mouth first. Contact our office to schedule a consultation with Dr. Capua. She will thoroughly examine your mouth to develop your personalized treatment plan. Then, we can give you
a better estimate on the price of your porcelain veneers.

Veneers FAQs

Dr. Capua and the rest of our team are looking forward to helping you create the smile of your dreams with veneers. If you have any questions about the treatment and what you can expect, please let us know; we’ll take the time to explain everything as clearly and concisely as possible so that you can be confident that you fully understand what you’re committing to. The following FAQs provide helpful answers to some of the questions about veneers that we’ve often heard in the past.

Are Veneers Permanent?

Veneers are not permanent, but they are irreversible. What that means is while the veneers themselves will eventually need to be replaced (usually after roughly 10 years or so), the process of placing them involves making permanent changes to your natural teeth. Specifically, a small amount of enamel is filed away so that the veneers fit properly and don’t appear too bulky. Since enamel can’t grow back, you’ll always need to wear a veneer or crown over the prepared teeth.

Is There Anything I Can’t Eat with Veneers?

When wearing temporary veneers, you should avoid ice, raw fruits and vegetables, peppermints, and other hard foods. You should also avoid anything sticky that could pull the veneers off. And since temporary veneers stain more easily than permanent ones, you should exercise caution around coffee and other dark-colored beverages.

Once your permanent veneers have been placed, you’ll be able to eat most foods again. However, hard foods can still damage your veneers if you’re not careful, so exercise caution. Also, try to drink alcohol as sparingly as possible, as it can weaken the bonding agent keeping your veneers attached to your teeth.

Do Veneers Give You a Lisp?

Veneers slightly change the thickness of your teeth, which can affect the movement of your tongue when pronouncing certain words. As a result, some people who get veneers do have a slight lisp at first. Fortunately, this problem normally goes away on its own once your tongue learns to account for your veneers.

If you’d like to speed up the adjustment process to get rid of your lisp more quickly, you can try practicing the pronunciation of certain words. The “s” and “v” sounds tend to be the most troublesome, so try focusing on those. Reading aloud can also help you get used to talking with veneers.

How Many Veneers Will I Need?

Obviously, the answer to this question is different for every patient. The goal of the treatment is for all of the teeth that are visible when you smile to match. Sometimes this might mean getting 6 to 8 veneers to correct specific teeth. In other situations, you might need to get enough veneers to cover all of your visible teeth. You can also get a single veneer if you only have one tooth that needs to be corrected due to a crack or another type of dental damage.
